(Galesburg, IL)  –  Immediately after a devastating earthquake that shook Haiti in 2010, a Knox College faculty member volunteered to help those who were displaced from their homes.  Nearly three years after the quake, many Haitians are still lacking shelter.  Daniel Beers, an assistant professor of political science at Knox College wants to know why.  During this past summer, Beers spent six weeks in Haiti for a research project on the matter.  Funding support for Beers' project came from an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation award to Knox College for faculty research, scholarship and professional development.  Beers said that what he is specifically intersted in is the response of the international community –  non-governmental organizations, foreign governments and the United Nations.  He wants to know how they've been working to address the problem and why the problem has proven to be so intractable.  Beers has been a faculty member of Knox College since 2010.
