Sandburg Volleyball Falls to Highland in Arrowhead Action
GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team couldn’t hang on to an early lead and lost to Highland 15-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-15 on Tuesday in an Arrowhead Conference match at John Lewis Gymnasium.
The Chargers (7-7, 2-5), backed by three kills apiece from freshman setter Lexa Mahr and freshman outside hitter Courtney Learned, raced to a 15-8 advantage and easily won the first set. Sandburg had leads in each of the next three sets but saw the Cougars rally each time.
The Chargers used a 6-0 run to go up 12-6 in the second, but Highland won the final four points, including a pair of set points for Sandburg. The Chargers led 23-21 in the third before the Cougars took five of the final six points to go up two sets to one. Sandburg grabbed a 10-7 advantage in the fourth, but Highland won nine of the next 10 for a lasting lead.
“We played really well in the first set, but we still have a long way to go,” Chargers coach Todd Winkler said.
Sophomore middle hitter Caitlyn Godfrey led Sandburg with 17 kills, 13 digs and three aces. Learned finished with nine kills and a team-best 14 digs while Mahr had 30 assists and matched freshman Sadie Van Norman for the team lead with two blocks.
The Chargers travel to face Sauk Valley in an Arrowhead match at 6 p.m. Wednesday and play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Monmouth JV.
