BYRON—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team qualified for the NJCAA Division II national tournament for the third time in four years after finishing second at the Region IV tournament Saturday at PrairieView Golf Course.

The Chargers shot 951 for the three-day tournament, edging Elgin by one shot for the second and final national-qualifying spot. Black Hawk won the tournament with a three-day total of 916. Black Hawk’s Cody Bender was the medalist with a 224.

“We got a huge break today by making it to nationals,” Sandburg coach K.C. Harding said. “To only finish one shot ahead in a three-day tournament is incredible. I’m very proud of my team for sticking it out and never giving up.”

The Chargers shot 322 in Friday’s second round but followed that with a 311 on Saturday for their lowest score of the tournament. Sophomore Nick Gustafson led Sandburg with a 1-over-par 73 in the final round and finished fourth individually with a 228 total. Freshman Joey Juergens shot a 78 for his best score of the tournament, and sophomores Cody Reiber, Chad Hatch and Mark Dockstader each fired an 80. Reiber placed seventh overall with a total of 233.

The national tournament will take place in May at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala.

“These sophomores missed out on their trip to nationals last year,” Harding said, “so I’m happy that in May we will be in Alabama participating for the third time in four years.”
