(Galesburg, IL) – The hiring of non-union labor workers by the contractor for construction work at the Knox County Courthouse has caused a minor setback and will likely result in an additional cost to the county because of the delay. A cement supplier refused to cross an informatial picket line of representatives of Local 647 operating engineers and Local 538 Laborors who are located outside of the courthouse while the non-union workers, working for Trotter General Contractors based in Macomb are working to replace the sidewalks. The unions are protesting the contractors decision to hire non-union employees. Knox County officials say that the non-union workers are being paid prevailing wages. The cement work was to have started last weeek on Wednesday, but instead did not start until Monday of this week. |
