MONMOUTH, Ill. — Michelle Hutchison, a Monmouth College senior from Galesburg, was one of an elite group of Illinois college students honored by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois on Nov. 3 at the Old State Capitol in Springfield.

Each year, an outstanding senior who exhibits overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular programs is selected from each of the four-year, degree-granting institutions of higher learning in Illinois. The Student Laureates are awarded a medallion of Lincoln, a certificate of merit and a stipend. They are chosen by the chief executive officers of their respective institutions, who also serve as Academic Trustees of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois.

“Michelle Hutchinson has been an outstanding student at Monmouth College and we are so pleased to name her our Lincoln Laureate,” said Jacquelyn Condon, MC’s vice president for student life and dean of students. “Her academic work has been impressive, and she has been a leader co-curricularly as well.”

A communications studies and public relations double major, Hutchison has served in many positions on campus, including president of the Order of Omega Greek honor society, resident assistant and president and a founding member of the Rotaract service club. She has also held numerous vice-president roles in the women’s fraternity Alpha Xi Delta, receiving a national award from the organization and representing AXD at its national convention as a collegiate delegate.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in May, Hutchison plans to attend graduate school and pursue a career in student affairs administration in higher education. To gain experience in that field, she has held student success and residence life intern positions at the college, including a current assistant position in the Wackerle Career and Leadership Center.

Per tradition with Monmouth’s Lincoln Laureates, Hutchison will address the graduating class at the 2013 commencement. She is the daughter of Patricia Hutchison of Galesburg.

The Lincoln Academy, unique among the 50 states, was established in 1964 to honor Illinois’ most distinguished citizens with the state’s highest award, the Order of Lincoln. The Student Laureate program began in 1975.
