Galesburg, IL – The Prairie Fire opened the 2012-13 season with three wrestlers earning victories in the Knox College Invitational on Saturday in T. Fleming Fieldhouse.
Earning one win apiece were first-year and #5 seed Austin Weaver (Grace, ID, Grace) in the 125 pound bracket, sophomore and #4 seed Mario Frye (Danville, IL, Danville) in the 141 pound bracket, and sophomore and #7 seed Greg Ventris (Moline, IL, Moline) in the 174 pound bracket.
Only individual results were kept in the 13-team invitational.
Weaver’s victory, a pin in 2:50, was against Alex Gutierrez of the Illinois State University Wrestling Club. He lost 11-4 in the quarterfinals to Anthony Hawkins of Calumet College of St. Joseph before falling by pin in 4:19 to Jabez Zinabu of Truman State.
Frye beat Central College’s Zach May 11-9 in the first round. He lost 5-1 against Isaiah Schaub of Augustana College in the quarterfinals and fell 9-6 in his final match of the day against Justin Smiley of Augustana.
Ventris opened with 9-3 decision against Tim Miller of Calumet College of St. Joseph. He then faced #2 seed Matt Burns of Augustana in the quarterfinals. Burns, who went on to win the 174 pound championship, defeated Ventris 12-3 in the quarterfinals. Ventris then went up against #1 seed Nathan Downs of Hannibal LaGrange University – who suffered a loss in the opening round. Downs outpointed Ventris 5-2 en route to claiming fifth place.
The Prairie Fire hosts a triangular on November 14 against Augustana College and the University of Dubuque at 6:00 p.m. in T. Fleming Fieldhouse.
