SCOUTING THE COUGARS: SIUE, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, brings an overall mark of 1-2 into the Monday (Nov. 19) meeting...Tierney Austin paces the squad with 42 points (14 ppg) and is followed by Raven Berry who has 38 points (12.6 ppg)...Berry has pulled down a team high 37 rebounds (12.3 rpg), 15 of which have come on the offensive end of the floor, and she also has eight steals (2.3 spg)...SIUE's roster is made up of three freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors and four seniors...The Cougars are coached by first year head coach Paula Buscher.
LAST MEETING: In the teams' last meeting on Jan. 20, 1986, Western fell by a score of 76-69.
FIRST THREE: Western opened its 2012-13 season in at Iowa State and dropped the contest 84-65, then returned to Macomb for a matchup against Clarke rebounding winning by a 50-point margin 85-35...In their last outing the Leathernecks shot 44.2 from the floor and had the score tied 56-all with five minutes left to play before the Tigers went on a decisive run to close it out 70-61.
HOT SHOTS: Five Leathernecks are shooting above .500 beyond the arc thus far in the season...Freshman Sophie Reichelt is a perfect three-for-three, freshman Liz Skotowski is two-for-two and senior Karis Phillips is one-for-one...Freshman Charnelle Reed is eight-for-13 (.615) and junior Rebecca Henricson is four-for-seven (.571)...Of all 34 Western threes, 18 were hit by members of the freshman class (.529)...The squad is shooting .420 from three-point range.
SUMMIT LEAGUE UPDATE: Thus far in the season, Omaha has the best overall mark of 2-0, while IUPUI, Kansas City and Oakland are each 2-1...Fort Wayne is even at 1-1 and North Dakota State is 2-2...Western Illinois, South Dakota & South Dakota State are all 1-2...Senior Saule Kontautaite is ranked 5th in points per game (16.3 ppg), freshman Charnelle Reed is 4th in field goal percentage (65.1)...Freshmen Sophie Reichelt and Liz Skotowski lead the league in three-point shot percentage (1.000)...Rebecca Henricson is 2nd in steals (8) 3rd in assists (12).
KONTAUTAITE PRESEASON ALL-LEAGUE, WESTERN PICKED 7th: Western Illinois senior guard Saule Kontautaite earned a spot on the preseason All-Summit League selections while the Leathernecks were picked to finish seventh in the poll, announced by the league office on Thursday (Oct. 18)...Head coaches, sports information directors and select media members voted in the poll...Last year Kontautaite was voted as the league’s ‘Newcomer of the Year’, and this year earned a spot on the preseason Second Team... She averaged 9.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while setting a program record hitting 67 3-point field goals. The senior guard started in 12 of her 31 games played...South Dakota State received 22 of the 25 first-place votes and was picked to repeat receiving 330 points...Kansas City, the tournament runner-up last year, received a first-place vote and tallied 260 points...Oakland (234) and North Dakota State (221) went third and fourth, respectively...IUPUI earned a first-place vote with 213 total points for fifth...South Dakota registered 151 points, just ahead of Western’s 138 points...Fort Wayne got the other first-place vote and recorded 96 points while Omaha’s 43 points rounded out the preseason poll.
