(Galesburg, IL)  --  Members of the Galesburg City Council will be deciding if there will be new taxes on gas and electric bills at tonight's meeting.  Members of the city council are expected to vote on the matter that would help fund capital projects as well as pension liability.  State law allows for municipalites to issue as much as a 5-percent tax on utilities.  However officials with the city say they would levy 40 percent of the maximum rate of the electricity tax, but it would take three years to incrementally reach the 5 percent marker.  Officials also say that gas bills would be taxed at 2-percent.  The gas and utility tax could generate about $936,000 in 2013 when combined.
