Grinnell College 107
Monmouth College 99
Monmouth held Grinnell to their lowest point total this season, but it wasn't enough as the Pioneers downed the Scots at Glennie Gym 107-99.
The Fighting Scots led most of the first half, taking an 11 point lead with 2:20 left in the half on Nick Marema's two free throws. After the Pioneers had cut it to seven, Brent Burrows' layup with four seconds left in the half sent Monmouth to the locker room with a 52-43 lead.
Monmouth kept the pressure on at the start of the second session, stretching their lead to 14 at 60-46 on a bucket by Mike DeDecker just 90 seconds after coming out of the locker room. Grinnell whittled away at the hole, taking a 78-76 lead with 9:07 left in the game, their first lead since they held a 23-22 edge with 9:59 left in the first half.
A pair of Kendall Cox free throws with 31 seconds left in the contest trimmed it to 104-99 before the Pioneers hit three of three of their last four free throws to ice the game.
Jon Calhoun led six Scots in double figures with 20 points as Monmouth shot 62 percent from the field.
Trailing 99-93 with 1:33 to go, Cox stole the ball but missed the ensuing layup. At the other end of the floor Nick Marema stopped a Grinnell drive but was called for a foul, and a technical on Mike DeDecker led to three free throws and a Grinnell possession, blunting a Scot's rally.
Grinnell improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Midwest Conference.
Aaron Levine led the Pioneers with 23 points. Jack Taylor, who set the NCAA scoring record with 138 in a game earlier this season, was held to 12 points.
The Scots were hurt by surrendering 21 offensive rebounds. They fell to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the MWC.
