GALESBURG—Another strong defensive effort led the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team to a 54-43 victory over Monmouth JV on Wednesday night,  John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

Freshman forward Destini Bollinger (Astoria) scored a game-high 12 points and fellow freshman forward Marysa Remick (ROWVA) added 10 points as the Chargers (3-6) won for the second time in three games. Sandburg has held opponents to 41 points per game during that stretch.

“Our defense definitely won us the game,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “We had to go small to match up to their lineup, and when we did I thought our defense played really well.”

Sandburg led 25-19,  halftime and used an 11-2 burst to go up 39-26 with 8 minutes, 40 seconds left. Bollinger started the spurt with a steal and coast-to-coast three-point play. Four straight Monmouth points cut the Chargers’ lead to nine with 7:30 left, but Bollinger answered with another steal and layup to give Sandburg a double-digit advantage again.

“That was a big lift for us,” Bailey said. “Those were two really big plays.”

Sophomore guard Makenzie Frank (Knoxville) scored seven of her nine points in the first half for the Chargers. Alyssa Riley and Tiffany Churchill led the Fighting Scots with 10 points apiece.

“With the way we’re playing defensively, I’ve got to believe that if we can find a way to get something going on offense we’re going to be pretty tough to beat,” Bailey said.

The Chargers’ next game is 6 p.m. Dec. 12 against John Wood,  John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
