The Galesburg Silver Streaks girl's basketball team suffered their first Western Big 6 loss of the campaign in a 86-78 loss to the Rock Island Rocks Thursday in a game of streaks for both clubs.
On an early barrage of four, 3-pointers Rock Island stunned the crowd at John Thiel Gymnasium, rushing to leads of 9-0 and 12-2 as the Streaks were held scoreless in the first four minutes of the game. Then Galesburg rallied to cut the lead to 21-19 at the end of the first quarter and tied the game at the half at 36. In the second half Galesburg pulled away to a lead as large as eight points, before Rock Island dominated play in the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter to go up by as many as nine. Then Galesburg rallied to as close as five with possession of the ball, but the Streaks could not get back over the hump and retake the lead.
Galesburg slipped to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the Western Big 6. Rock Island remained undefeated after the clash of state-ranked teams improving to 7-0 and 3-0.
Galesburg committed 40 turnovers, Rock Island had 38.
Jessica Lieber led Galesburg with 16 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the line. Sharron Diggins and Rainee Sibley added 10 each, Casey Williams 11. Galesburg was 28-of-40 from the line.
Shavonne Brewer led all scorers with 21 for the Rocks, she was 10-of-10 from the line. Mercedes Jackson added 19, 15 in the second half. The Rocks were 21-of-32 from the line.
In the Sophomore game Rock Island beat Galesburg 62-44 despite 12 points from Shayli Florine.
Mariah Hoover had 13 for the Rocks.
