For a third time, members of the Galesburg City Council voted down a gas use tax. At last week's work session, a majority of the council favored levying the tax, but Monday night, the council voted down the tax by a 4-3 vote. That means that the city council would have to approve a budget for the next fiscal year that will include over $600,000 in cuts. One of the cuts would be a captain's position with the Galeburg Fire Department. Alderman voted to cut $95,000 for vehicle replacement and a $100,000 reduction in the city's contingency fund allotman. Several other cuts were also approved. Council approved the budget by a 6-1 vote. |
