Leatherneck Swimming & Diving Prepared for Back-to-Back Meets
Western will face Eastern Illinois and South Dakota in Macomb this Friday (Jan. 18) and Saturday (Jan. 19)

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois swimming and diving returns to Brophy Hall Pool this weekend hosting two meets on back-to-back dates against Eastern Illinois and South Dakota. The first meet begins at 6 p.m. this Friday (Jan. 19) and the second kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 20).

In competition at the IUPUI Quad last weekend, the Leathernecks recorded a total of 15 top three finishes. Matt Abercrombie earned the lone event title in the 1650 free with a time of 16:41.40.

Earning second place finishes for the men were Tyler Neaveill in the 100 free (48.31), Kevin Arakaki in the 200 back (2:02.85), JD Furr in the 200 breast (2:17.44) and Doug Ogilvie in one-meter diving (286.25). The 200 medley relay team of Jonathan Bond, Furr, Neaveill and Austin Payne also took second.

Securing third place spots were Neaveill in the 50 free (21.95), Arakaki in the 100 back (55.83), Jacob Shain in the 200 fly (2:02.64) and 100 fly (55.01) and Doug Ogilvie in three-meter diving (3:16.02). Bond, Payne, Dylon Rykosky and Neaveill worked for a third place finish in the 400 free relay.

Julia Rassmussen posted the only first place event finish for the women's team in one-meter diving. Her score of 235.65 was a season-best by a 23.25-point margin. Lizzie Hollopeter took third in two events for the Leathernecks in the 100 back (1:03.25) and 200 back (2:14.63).

NO STRANGER: These meets mark the second time Western Illinois swimming and diving has faced Eastern Illinois this season... The teams first competed against one another at the House of Champions multiple day meet hosted by IUPUI Nov. 30-Dec. 2... The men defeated Eastern 1268-1041, while the women fell 780-470 to the Panthers.

TOP SPOTS: Western had two student-athletes earn event titles in its last competition at the IUPUI Quad meet... Matt Abercrombie edged out runner-up Rich Sunkel of IUPUI by less than a half of a second to record the win with a time of 16:41.40... Julia Rassmussen recorded a season-best score by a 23.25-point margin in one-meter diving competition to take the top spot with a 235.65 mark.

RANKING MEN: A trio of Leathernecks have posted times that rank among the Summit League's 'Top 10' times this season... Matt Abercrombie is second in the 1650 free (16:24.23), seventh in the 1000 free (9:57.58), ninth in the 400 IM (4:15.44) and 10th in the 500 free (4:46.24)... Dylon Rykosky ranks ninth in the 200 IM (1:56.67) and 10th in the 200 fly (1:55.86) and 200 free (1:43.96)... Doug Ogilvie is fourth in three-meter diving (310.80) and fifth in one-meter diving (286.88).

LEADING LADY: Julia Rassmussen moved up to the fourth spot with her score of 235.65 on the Summit League's 'Top 10' score list for one-meter diving.

ACCUMULATING ACCOLADES: A total of three Leathernecks have been honored by the Summit League as Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week... Most recently, Sophomore Tyler Neaveill and freshman Megan Popp each earned their first Athlete of the Week nod for their performances against Illinois-Chicago on Saturday (Dec. 15)... Freshman Matt Abercrombie earned the honor on Oct. 6 after earning event victories in the 500 free (4:54.72) and the 200 IM (2:02.03) and placing runner-up in the 1000 free with a time of 10:04.18.

UP NEXT: The Fighting Leathernecks travel to St. Louis, Mo. for a dual meet against the Billikens of Saint Louis on Friday (Jan. 25) beginning at 6 p.m.... This marks the second meeting of the two teams in the 2012-13 season... The first meeting, on Saturday (Oct. 6), was held at Brophy Hall Pool in Macomb... Both squads fell to the Billikens 172-128 (men) and 199-85 (women).

CAPTAINS: Junior Jonathan Bond and senior Bart Pienkowski will be team captains for the men and a pair of juniors, Haley Brasile and Julia Rassmussen, were chosen to captain the women's team.

PRESEASON POLL: Western Illinois was predicted to finish last in the Summit League standings in the men's and women's preseason coaches polls... Oakland, South Dakota State and IUPUI were chosen to finish as the top three for the men and the women.
