(Galesburg, IL)  --  A Galesburg man who is facing charges that include aggravated battery, mob action and fleeing police was in Knox County Circuit Court on Tuesday.  William Dean McClendon, 21, was arrested early Monday morning after police were notified of a battery that had allegedly taken place.  Police say that a man had thrown a woman out of a car and then fled the scene with two children in the vehicle.  The vehicle was traveling southbound in the 1000 block of South Academy Street and was reported to be driven by McClendon.  Police say that the vehicle was spotted  turning into McClendon's driveway at his residence on South Academy Street.  McClendon then got out of the vehicle and ran behind his residence.  Police then tracked footprints in the snow to a residence on South Cedar Street.  They located McClendon at that residence where he was arrested.  Bond for McClendon has been set at $100,000.

{Oneida, IL)  --  A birthday of an Oneida woman turned tragic when her home caught on fire on Tuesday.  Vicki Behringer, 56, returned home at about 3:30 p.m. when she detected a smoky oder that she thought was coming from her bathroom  After checking the bathroom and determining it was OK, she returned to the living room and found a coat rack was on fire.  Firefighters from the Victoria as well as the Altona-Oneida-Wataga Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene.  The American Red Cross is helping out, providing assistance to Behringer.  Anyone wishing to make a donation to the Western Illinois Chapter of the Red Cross can call 309-344-1611.

(Undated)  --  Poverty has a grip on Illinois and won't let go. A new report by the Social Impact Research Center finds one in three Illinoisans, or 33 percent, living in poverty or on the brink of it. Amy Terpstra, the report's co-author, says she has been researching this issue for several years and hasn't seen numbers like this in a long time. The report says the impovershed live in all types of neighborhoods in Illinois, and it profiles several. For example, a Wheaton woman with a college degree works at a fast food restaurant but can't even afford the dollar cup of coffee there. The report cites low wages, lack of affordable housing, joblessness and medical bankruptcies as causes. Among the remedies it recommends is an increase in the minimum wage.

(Galesburg, IL)  --  Wells Fargo is set to relocate its downtown Galesburg bank.  It will be moving to the former Associated Bank building with the new operation possibly be up and running around June 1st.  The Wells Fargo motor bank located at 160 North Prairie Street will also be moving to the new location. Wells Fargo will be leasing the new location from MAK Properties. 

(Galesburg, IL)  --  Those who are taking part in the Galesburg Public Library's "Reading is My Thing" as part of the January family reading program will have the chance to win prizes for reading.  Those taking part can sign up, join Thing One and Thing Two and read with your family over this month.  Those signing up in the Children's Room can read together to earn bookmarks, candy, plastic bags and a book.  At each level, there will also be opportunities for those participating to bring non-perishable food items for the FISH Food Pantry.  If you would like more information, you can contact Children's Services by calling 309-343-6118, extension 7.
