Galesburg News 1-22-13

(Galesburg, IL)  --  A man is in custody after a fatal stabbing that occured over the weekend in Galesburg.  Police say they arrested 25-year old Kai A. Lefler Sunday afternoon on South Broad Street.  Lefler has been charged with first degree murder and with aggravated battery with a weapon in connection with the stabbing death of 23-year old Robert L. Kilgore of Galesburg.  The stabbing allegedly happened on Chestnut Street early Sunday morning.  Kilgore was taken to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria where he died at about 11 a.m. Sunday.  He was first taken to Cottage Hospital in Galesburg before being taken to the Peoria hospital by LifeFlight Helicopter.  Lefler is due to appear in Knox County Circuit Court for a bond hearing today.


(Galesburg, IL)  --  Galesburg police are looking into the break-in of a home that took place over the weekend.  Police say that the resident of a home located on Cedar Street came home from work and found that someone had taken the television and a guitar.  Police say that it appears that the burglars apparently got into the home through a bedroom window.  The window was still open when the owner returned to the home.  The burglar then apparently left the home through a side door of the home on the west side of the structure.  The resident followed muddy footprints that were left through out the home to the side door.  The value of the items taken were placed at $350.  It was the second break-in of the home in a month.


(Galesburg, IL)  --  A Quincy based architectural firm with a branch in Galesburg, recently purchased a new laser scanning system and are using it to help with 3D data at the Knox County Courthouse.  Officials with the Galesburg branch of Klingner/Metzger Johnson Architects say the scanning equipment is a Trimble TX5 Laser Scanning System.  Officials say they hope to collect 3D building data from building facades as well as to access areas in the courthouse that are difficult areas of building interiors. They hope the data will expedite designs for building renovations.


(Woodhull, IL)  --  Any business in Woodhull could be able to have video gaming machines, but only if the village acts upon an ordinance for the request.  Members of the village board were told that at a meeting last week. It was in responce to the request from pilot Travel Center to have the video gaming machines at its business.  Officials with the village of Woodhull say they are continuing to survey the public in regard to the video gaming devices at area businesses.


(Galesburg, IL)  --  Work on a fiber-optic cable project last week disrupted and caused some problems in the downtown Galesburg.    Comcast is running a fiber-optic cable from Ferris Street to Simmons Street, then it goes south to Prairie Street and then connects to the Galesburg Register-Mail building.  Officials say the problem occured Friday  at about 10 a.m. and was caused by a Comcast subcontractor.

(Galesburg, IL)  --  Local educators are being invited to submit course proposals for Knox College 4 Kids 2013.  The program is for kids who are in grades three through eight and will be offered from June 17th through June 28th on the Knox College campus.  In 2012, over 260 children participated in more than 40 courses in the humanities, physical and social sciences, fine arts, languages and mathematics. The deadline is Friday, February 22nd.  In addition to the morning session, consisting of three classes for grades three through eighth.  Knox College 4 Kids also offers a special program in leterature, art, music, science and mathematics for first and second grade students.  Information is available by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. (Undated)  --  The Illinois Corn Marketing Board is accepting applications for three summer internship positions.  Also, the Illinois Corn Growers Association is seeking applications for one positions.  Details about the internships can be found at their website: www.ilcorn.org.  The three ICMB positions include an Education Specialist to administer training to teachers in the Ag in the Classroom Summer Institute Program.  Two are communication internships.  One of the Communications internships will focus on technical production of videos and graphics while assisting with social media.  The other internship will focus on issues such as management, scripting video and also social meeting. The internship with ICGA will be for filling a legislative  position.


(Undated)  --  Cold weather is here for the next few days.  Dr. David Hahn of Spoon River Animal Clinic in Canton says that energy requirements increase with colder weather.

Dr. Hahn also says to check water to make sure that it isn't frozen on a regular basis so the animals will be able to drink.
