Fire Destroys Vacant Warehouse

(Chicago, IL)  --  Investigators from Chicago Fire hope today they can look closer into the cause of last night's "5-11" blaze that destroyed a vacant warehouse building in a South Side neighborhood.  Authorities declared just after midnight the fire at the Harris Marcus Group building on South Ashland Avenue was under control but still burning.  Hours earlier nearly one-third of Chicago Fire's on-duty firefighters were called using a rare "special alarm" for additional equipment and personnel.  Flames high enough they were seen from Interstate 55 led to the collapse of the building's roof and large section of an exterior wall.  Several nearby structures were threatened.  One firefighter was treated for a minor injury.

Lawsuit Says Chicago Police Used Racial Slurs

(Chicago, IL)  --  Chicago police are in the sights of a new lawsuit filed in federal court.  Channel 9 says the family of a man killed by Chicago police in December have field the a lawsuit claiming officers taunted them by using racial slurs.  Authorities say 23-year-old Jamaal Moore was involved in an armed robbery and was killed by officers that night because they believed he was holding a gun - which later proved to be a flashlight.  Moore's family claims police called them a derogatory name numerous times at the scene.

IL Fares Well In Government Corruption Study

(Undated)  --  The state of Illinois gets encouraging marks in a new study of government corruption.  The annual State Integrity Investigation gives Illinois an overall grade of C on its newly-released corruption risk report card.  The report says in light of Illinois' notorious ethical legacy only limited reforms have been enacted.  Illinois fared poorly in the categories of legislative accountability, civil-service management and redistricting.

Home Cooking Sweet In Hawks' 3-2 Victory

(Chicago, IL)  --  The long-awaited home-opener for the Blackhawks ends with a 3-to-2-victory over Saint Louis.  More than 21-thousand hockey fans watched at United Center as the Blackhawks won their third game in a row.  Patrick Kane, Brent Seabrook and Viktor Stalberg all scored for Chicago.
