WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) was named to the Farm Commodities and Risk Management Subcommittee and the Livestock and Rural Development Subcommittee of the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture.  Cheri was named to the House Committee on Agriculture on January 4th and the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure last month.

“Fighting for agriculture, our region’s number one industry, is one of my top priorities,” said Congresswoman Cheri Bustos.  “I’ll fight for the crops we grow, the livestock we raise, and the agricultural products we manufacture.  In addition, I will make sure we have a strong crop insurance program and our rural communities are growing and thriving.  Through my service on the House Committee on Agriculture, I’ll make sure our region has a seat at the table in Washington.”

The General Farm Commodities and Risk Management Subcommittee focuses on programs and markets related to soybeans, corn, feed grains, oilseeds and other crops grown throughout Illinois.  In addition, it focuses on the Commodity Credit Corporation, risk management and crop insurance and commodity exchanges.

The Livestock, Rural Development and Credit Subcommittee focuses on livestock, dairy, poultry, meat and other commodities, including the inspection, marketing and promotion of such commodities.  It also focuses on rural development, farm security and family farming matters.

Illinois’ 17th Congressional District is the home to thousands of farmers and millions of acres of farmland.  It is a world leader in agricultural products, including grain and oilseed production, as well as hogs and cattle.

It is also home to the headquarters of large manufacturing employers Caterpillar and Deere & Co., which employ thousands of workers in Illinois’ 17th Congressional District.

The entire western border of the Congressional District is met by the Mississippi River, on which the barge transportation of agricultural products is key to commerce in the region.

Additionally, the USDA research center in Peoria is at the forefront of finding new uses for crops and creating new technology that improves environmental quality and food safety.
