(Galesburg, IL) -- Authorities in Knox County are notifying local businesses through the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce about a theft in Warren County that took place on Monday. The residential theft resulted in the loss of silver dollars, fifty cent pieces and two dollar bills that may be attempted to be used in Galesburg or the surrounding areas. If any local businesses have received a large payment using any of these types of currency or have knowledge of those who have, please alert your local jurisdiction in order to aid the investigation.

 

 

(Galesburg, IL) -- A 25-year old man from Oneida is facing nine felony counts in connection with the fatal shooting of a Galesburg man over the weekend. Kai Lefleer was in Knox County Circuit Court on Tuesday. He faces four counts of murder, two counts of second degree murder and single counts of involuntary manslaughter, possession of a weapon by a felon as well as aggravated battery. Authorities say that Lefler stabbed 23-year old Robert Kilgore early Sunday morning. Kilgore died after being taken by LifeFlight Helicopter from Cottage Hospital in Galesburg to OSF-St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Lefler is due back in Knox County Court on Monday.

 

 

(Canton, IL) -- A Galesburg man is facing charges after attempting to take items from the Walmart in Canton. Police say they were notified by Loss Prevention Personnel at Walmart on Monday afternoon at just before 1 that a person was inside the store attempting to committ retail theft. An investigation found that the suspect, 23-year old Travis W. Young, was trying to take a computer and a car stereo from the store located at 2071 North Main Street. The police report indicated that when Loss Prevention Personnel approached Young, he then fled the store on foot and then the parking lot in his vehicle. He the headed north on Illinois Route 78 and went to Farmington. He was traveling at 85 miles per hour during the police pursuit. When Young got to Farmington, he pulled into a gas station parking lot and turned himself over to police. He had previously been banned from all Walmart stores as a result of a retail theft. Young was arrested and taken back to the Canton Police Department. After being processed, Young was unable to post bond and was taken to the Fulton County Jail in Lewistown.

 

 

(Galesburg, IL) -- With the Martin Luther King Holiday on Monday, the Galesburg City Council met on Tuesday instead. Among the discussion taking place Tuesday night was about energy aggregation which was approved in November with a referendum that was on the ballot. Council approved a contract that calls for all of the Galesburg energy be 100 percent renewable. The City Administration recommended the approval of a bid that would provide the most costs savings but would not have renewable energy. In regard to the sale of liquor on Sunday morning, all Galesburg vendors will be allowed to sell liquor as early as 7 a.m.

 

 

(Galesburg, IL) -- A Knox Prairie Community Kitchen meal will be provided tonight at the Central Congregational Church in Galesburg. The meal is being sponsored by the Peterson family of Galesburg. The meal is free and will be slow roasted pulled pork with vegetables that will be served over rice as the main entree. Also provided will be a salad and mixed fruit for dessert. Doors will open for the meal at 5:15 p.m. tonight. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. Doors will close then at 7 p.m. Individuals, families, organizations and businesses can sponsor a meal that will help feed their friends and neighbors.

 

 

(Galesburg, IL) -- The emphsasis was on sharing stories and experiences as Knox College students who have studied abroad gathered at the traditional "Welcome Back" dinner that was held earlier this month. Robin Ragan, Director of the Eleanor Stellyes Center for Global Studies, urged students to keep talking about their time abroad and incorporated what they learned as they resume life at Knox. Knox College President Teresa Amott also spoke at the dinner. Those returning included Ragan who had been in Barcelona, Spain running the Knox in Barcelona program; Kelsey Cullum, a junior from Libertyville, studied in Denmark for the 2012 fall term; and Laura Thompson, a senior Spanish major studied in both Barcelona and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

 

 

(Galesburg, IL) -- Carl Sandburg College is seeking entries for the 24th annual Sandburg College Poetry Competition. The contest is open to the general public, and poems will be judged in three categories: elementary, 1st thru 5th grade; Intermediate, 6th thru 12th grade; and adult. Winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony on April 18th that will begin at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will take place in the Student Center on the main campus in Galesburg, located at 2400 Tom L. Wilson Boulevard during Sandburg Days Festival for the Mind that will be held from April 17th thru the 212st.
