The West Central High School boys bowling team qualified for the IHSA State Final, final round at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon, Il. and the Heat finished in 12th place out of 24 total schools. West Central got off to a great start on Friday morning and sat in 5th place overall after the first round of the preliminaries. After the second round on Friday afternoon, the Heat hung on to 10th place and reached the final round for the first time in school history. On Saturday, the Heat sat in 12th place after the morning's first round and in the second round, almost caught Roselle Lake Park for 11th but came up 3 pins short. Lockport Township ended the IHSA State Champ with tournament host O'Fallon coming in second. Individually, Colin Rothzen finished in 18th place and Layne Stogdill ended his tournament in 54th place overall. Also bowling for the Heat were, Kyler Engen, Zach Swisher, Matt Bundy, Brandon Knuth and Cody Reidel. West Central Sophomore, Zack Bundy, finished in 2nd place in the Wheelchair Division, only 19 pins out of first.
This is the 3rd time in the last 4 years the Heat have made the state tournament. Last year ended a 2 year qualifying streak as they lost their home bowling alley, Charlie's Country Fun, to a fire on Christmas Eve 2011 and were forced to play the remainder of their schedule on the road. The Heat are coached by Sue Rothzen, a former IHSA Bowling Coach of the Year. Her son, Colin, made his 4th straight appearance at state, either as an individual or as a part of the Heat team. He also is an integral part of the West Central Varsity basketball team. As opposed to other IHSA varsity sports, there is only one classification in bowling and the Heat were by far the smallest school competing in O'Fallon this past weekend.
