The Galesburg Silver Streak boys and girls split their doubleheader on Saturday.
The girls started the day off and dropped a 55-48 decision to New Trier High School. The Streaks shot a lowly 20% from the field in the game despite only committing 13 turnovers. That was a definitie improvement from Friday night as they committed 35 turnovers in a loss to the United Township Panthers. Galesburg trailed 16-11 heading to the second period and never trailed aftwards. Jessica Leiber led the Streaks with 13 points. Haley Kelso, starting for the injured Sharron Diggins, added 12 points on four 3-pointers. The loss is the 5th in a row for Galesburg and they fall to (17-12) overall on the season. the Streaks sophomores beat New Trier 59-51.
The boys were also in action at John Thiel Gymnasium on Saturday night and picked up a 79-63 victory over Blue Island Eisenhower to improve to (15-12). Eisenhower employs a similar system to the Galesburg Silver Streak girls basketball team and that led to many layup opportunities that the Streaks took advantage of and shot 56% from the field. Galesburg took a 45-32 lead to the halftime break and cruised from there. Grant Gibson scored 22 points, 16 in the first half, Ethan Meeker had 17 and Joe Williams also hit double figures with 10. The Streaks sophomores also defeated Eisenhower 63-55.
