GALESBURG -- Knox College will present speakers, entertainment and community service events on campus during February to celebrate Black History Month.


All month, members of the student club ABLE will collect non-perishable foods on campus to be delivered to the Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center in Galesburg.

The music group Kuumba Lynx will perform at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, February 16, in Kresge Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts. Kuumba Lynx is an arts and education organization that focuses on urban arts, culture, creative expression and literacy for Chicago youth. The performance is free and open to the public.

A student talent showcase featuring music, poetry, dance and displays of visual art will be presented at 7 p.m., Friday, February 22, in Kresge Hall. The student showcase is free and open to the public.

Charles Payne of the University of Chicago, will give a free, public lecture, "Contemporary African-American History: From 1963 to Today," at 4 p.m., Monday, February 25, in Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union. Payne is Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Service Professor in the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago, where he is also an affiliate of the Urban Education Institute. Payne's talk is presented as part of the on-going series CommUNITY, events at Knox that explore the themes of diversity and inclusivity in society and education.

Other events that are open to Knox students will include a series of informal talks by Knox College President Teresa Amott, and Knox faculty Jessie Dixon, Wendell Hunigan and Karin Wimbley; as well as educational events for Knox students on the issues of HIV awareness, race and skin color, and job opportunities for students in education.

Black History Month events at Knox are coordinated by the ABLE -- Allied Blacks for Liberty and Equality. Events are co-sponsored by ABLE, Union Board and other student organizations; the Center for Intercultural Life and other campus offices and academic departments.


Founded in 1837, Knox College is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois. Knox enrolls students from 48 states and U.S. territories and 51 countries. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
