Galesburg's Michelle Williams won the Biology compeition, while Monmouth-Roseville and Valley won the team titlesas as nearly 170 students from 12 area high schools tested their knowledge in a variety of subjects in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge regional competition Thursday at Carl Sandburg College.
The top three overall finishers in each category received awards, and the top two in each division from each category advanced to compete in the WYSE sectional competition March 18 at Knox College. AlWood, Bushnell-Prairie City, ROWVA, Spoon River Valley and United competed in Division 300. Farmington, Knoxville, Monmouth-Roseville, Rockridge and Sherrard competed in Division 700. Galesburg competed in Division 1,500, and United Township was in the unlimited division. Students were tested in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics.
Matt Welch of AlWood was named the individual champion. Welch won the mathematics category for the third straight year and finished third in physics.
Spoon River Valley took first place in Division 300, followed by AlWood and ROWVA. Monmouth-Roseville was first in Division 700, with Farmington coming in second and Knoxville in third. Monmouth-Roseville won the combined title for Divisions 300 and 700 for the second straight year.
Each team received a talent scholarship — a full-tuition scholarship for a full-time student at Sandburg — for the 2013-2014 academic year. Teams also were awarded a talent scholarship for having an overall winner in math, chemistry and English. It was the largest competition in CSC history.
The WYSE Academic Challenge is offered by more than 50 community colleges and universities in Illinois and Missouri. Material for the multiple-choice tests is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula.
