Area children can receive care for their favorite bear during the Carl Sandburg College Teddy Bear Clinic from 8 a.m. to noon March 6 and 7 in John M. Lewis Gymnasium on the Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blv.

Pre-schoolers, kindergarteners and first-graders from the Sandburg Children’s School, Costa Catholic Academy, Galesburg Christian School and area day cares will bring a teddy bear to be “examined” by second-year students in Sandburg’s associate degree nursing program.

Children also will participate in activities designed by nursing students to learn about important health care issues such as nutrition, hand washing and exercise. Students in Sandburg’s dental hygiene program will have puppets to demonstrate proper teeth brushing and share why it’s important.

The Teddy Bear Clinic is a service learning project for second-year Sandburg nursing students. The goal of the clinic is to teach children about important health care issues and help them understand that nurses and health care providers are there to assist them and that they shouldn’t be frightened.
