Cardinals Power Past Past Marlins
(Jupiter, FL) -- Two-run homers from Matt Holliday and Oscar Taveras helped power the Cardinals to a 7-2 win over the Marlins in Grapefruit League play. Ronny Cedeno, Matt Adams and Rob Johnson added solo shots for the Redbirds. Starter Jake Westbrook allowed four hits and one run in three innings. The Cardinals host the Yankees in Jupiter this afternoon.
Cards Hire McGee As Special Assistant To GM
(Jupiter, FL) -- Willie McGee is now a full-time employee of the Cardinals. The former outfield star has been hired as a special assistant to General Manager John Mozeliak [[ mo-ZAY-lack ]]. McGee will focus his attention on the minor leagues. The 1985 NL MVP had already been working as a guest instructor this spring at the invitation of manager Mike Matheny.
Cubs Fall To Rangers
(Surprise, AZ) -- Lance Berkman hit a solo homer as the Rangers clipped the Cubs 3-2 in Cactus League action in Surprise. Scott Hairston hit a solo shot for Chicago. Brian Bogusevic also drove in a run for the Cubs. Starter Hisanori Takahashi gave up five hits and all three runs in three innings of work to take the loss. The Cubs host the White Sox today in Mesa.
Blues At Coyotes Tonight
(Glendale, AZ) -- The Blues make the third stop on their five-game road trip tonight in Phoenix. The Note has lost the first two games on the swing to Dallas and Los Angeles. The Blues have lost five of their last seven games to slip to 11-9-and-2 on the season. Phoenix was a 2-0 loser last night in Anaheim. The Blues and Coyotes rematch in St. Louis next Thursday.
Rams Release Hunter
(St. Louis, MO) -- Wayne Hunter is no longer with the Rams. The Rams have released the veteran tackle. The move is expected to save the team four-million-dollars in salary cap space. Back and knee injuries have hampered Hunter's effectiveness. He was acquired from the Jets for former second-overall pick Jason Smith last AuguSt.
Billikens Fall In OT To Xavier
(Cincinnati, OH) -- Kwamain Mitchell scored 17 points to go with five rebounds and four steals as the Billikens fell to Xavier 77-66 in overtime. Dwayne Evans added 16 points and nine rebounds for Saint Louis, which dipped to 23-and-6 and 12-and-3 in the Atlantic 10. The Billikens close out the regular season Saturday at home against La Salle.
Mizzou At Tennessee Saturday
(Knoxville, TN) -- Missouri will try to close out the regular season with four straight wins Saturday afternoon at Tennessee. The Tigers blew out Arkansas 93-63 on Tuesday for their third consecutive victory. Laurence Bowers had 24 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Mizzou is now 22-and-8 overall and 11-and-6 in the SEC. The Vols are 17-and-11 and 9-and-7.
Illinois At Ohio State Sunday
(Columbus, OH) -- Illinois finishes up the regular season Sunday afternoon at 13th-ranked Ohio State. The Fighting Illini are coming off a 63-55 loss at Iowa on Tuesday. Illinois has dropped two of its last three games to fall to 21-and-10 overall and 8-and-9 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes knocked off top-ranked Indiana on Tuesday and are now 22-and-7 and 12-and-5.
Big East Ok's Catholic 7
(Undated) -- The Big East Conference will be moving forward without seven basketball members. ESPN reports the conference will announce today that it has reached a deal with the newly formed Catholic 7. DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's and Villanova will keep the Big East naming rights and play its conference tournament at Madison Square Garden.
The seven schools will leave June 30th and start its new conference July 1st. Butler, Creighton and Xavier are expected to join for the 2013-14 season. Saint Louis and Dayton are also possible members for the 2014-15 season to bring the membership to 12.
