Governor Quinn Announces $529,000 for Carl Sandburg College Science Lab Renovation

Illinois Jobs Now! Project Will Create Jobs, Improve Galesburg Campus

Governor Pat Quinn announced more than $529,000 for the renovation of science laboratories at Carl Sandburg College as part of his Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program. The project is part of Governor Quinn’s agenda to create jobs and drive Illinois’ economy forward. Contracts were recently awarded for the project following a competitive bidding process. The work addresses some of Illinois’ critical infrastructure needs and creates good construction jobs.

“Investment in education projects is one of the best ways to grow our economy and create jobs,” Quinn said. “This Illinois Jobs Now! project will help us continue to ensure Illinois has a strong, 21st century infrastructure while creating jobs and boosting the area economy.”

Korte & Luitjohan Contractors, Inc. of Highland, Illinois was the lowest of eight bidders for the general remodeling and rehabilitation work with their quote of $338,000. Mechanical Service of Galesburg Inc. received the contract for the plumbing portion of the project on their bid of $191,629. The work should begin within a few weeks and should take about one year to complete.

The project includes the renovation of the science laboratories, including replacing the casework and countertops; upgrading the electrical, mechanical, ventilating and plumbing systems; replacing the flooring; and abating asbestos-containing material. The four existing science labs serving Carl Sandburg College students have not been updated since they were first constructed in 1975. These four labs include one for chemistry, two for biology, and one for physics that together comprise approximately 5,000 square feet. Each lab serves approximately 24 students and provides for basic science courses that are integral to the college’s curricula and degrees.

“This project includes needed upgrades at the college and will create several construction jobs in the process,” Capital Development Board (CDB) Executive Director Jim Underwood said. The CDB manages all non-road, state-funded construction projects.

“This is a much needed addition to the science facilities at Carl Sandburg College.  Science is a key component of any modern education,” Senator Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap) said.  “The students at CSC will benefit greatly from these upgraded labs.”

"I commend the Governor for making these funds available to Carl Sandburg College. This will allow our students to be equipped with cutting-edge technology that will be needed for employment in emerging careers," State Rep. Donald Moffitt (R-Galesburg said).

Governor Quinn’s $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! is supporting more than 439,000 jobs over six years. It the largest capital construction program in Illinois history, and is one of the largest capital construction programs in the nation.
