D'backs Down Cards In Opener
(Phoenix, AZ) -- A.J. Pollock went 3-for-4 with a two-run double as the Diamondbacks downed the Cardinals 6-2 in the season opener for both clubs at Chase Field. Matt Holliday and Daniel Descalso plated a run each for the Redbirds in defeat. Adam Wainwright fanned six, but allowed four runs, three earned, on 11 hits in six frames to suffer the loss.
Cards, D'backs Game Two Tonight
(Phoenix, AZ) -- The Cardinals and D'backs get right back at it tonight in the desert. The second game of the three-game series in Arizona is set for tonight, with first pitch at 8:40 p.m. Jaime [[ HIGH-may ]] Garcia will start for St. Louis, while the Snakes counter with Trevor Cahill [[ KAY-hill ]]. Lance Lynn and Brandon McCarthy square off in the finale tomorrow night.
Cubs Pick Off Pirates
(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Anthony Rizzo belted a two-run homer in the top of the first inning and the Cubs went on to beat the Pirates 3-1 at PNC Park. Jeff Samardzija [[ suh-MARD-zjuh ]] struck out nine while allowing just two hits and a walk over eight shutout innings. Kyuji Fujikawa got the final out in the ninth to post his first save. The teams play again tomorrow night.
Blues Clamp Down On Wild
(St. Paul, MN) -- Jaden Schwartz and Andy McDonald had a goal and an assist each to lead the Blues in a 4-1 win over the Wild. Barret Jackman and Kevin Shattenkirk also lit the lamp for St. Louis, which ended a three-game slide. Jaroslav Halak [[ YAHR-roh-slav HAH-lak ]] made five saves before departing late in the first period with a lower-body injury. Brian Elliott came on to stop 19-of-20 shots in relief. The Blues play the Blackhawks in Chicago on Thursday.
Flames Ship Bouwmeester To Blues
(Undated) -- The Blues have acquired veteran defenseman Jay Bouwmeester from the Calgary Flames. In exchange for the 29-year-old, the Blues sent the Flames a first-round pick and a pair of prospects. Defenseman Mark Cundari and goalie Reto Berra are on their way to Calgary's organization. If the Blues do not qualify for the playoffs, the Flames will receive this year's fourth-round pick with the first-round selection being deferred to 2014.
Rams Re-Sign Williams
(St. Louis, MO) -- Chris Williams is coming back to the Rams. The free-agent offensive lineman has agreed to a one-year contract. The 27-year-old spent the second half of last season with St. Louis. The former first-round pick signed with the Rams in October before the team left for London to play the Patriots. Williams will provide depth at both guard and tackle.
