Rizzo, Samardzija Carry Cubs Past Pirates

(Pittsburgh, PA)  --  Anthony Rizzo belted a two-run homer in the top of the first inning and the Cubs went on to beat the Pirates 3-1 at PNC Park.  Jeff Samardzija [[ suh-MARD-zjuh ]] struck out nine while allowing just two hits and a walk over eight shutout innings.  Kyuji Fujikawa got the final out in the ninth to post his first save.  The series continues tomorrow as Edwin Jackson takes the ball opposite Wandy Rodriguez.

Cubs Place Barney On DL

(Pittsburgh, PA)  --  The Cubs have placed second baseman Darwin Barney on the disabled list because of his left knee laceration.  He suffered the cut in Saturday's exhibition game and was unable to go in yesterday's opener.  Infielder Alberto Gonzalez was officially recalled to the active roster.  Pitcher Robert Whitenack was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

No Deal On Wrigley Renovations Yet

(Chicago, IL)  --  There's still no deal on renovating Wrigley Field.  Staff from the mayor's office and executives from the Cubs met Monday to talk about proposed improvements to the historic ball park.  Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he believes an agreement can be reached.

Sale Sharp As White Sox Blank Royals

(Chicago, IL)  --  Tyler Flowers homered in the fifth inning for the game's only run as the White Sox edged the Royals 1-0 at U.S. Cellular Field.  Chris Sale struck out seven while allowing seven hits and one walk over seven-and-two-thirds innings for the win.  Three relievers followed, with Addison Reed recording the final three outs for his first save.  The series resumes tomorrow when Jake Peavy gets the start against Ervin Santana.

Blackhawks Edge Preds In Shootout

(Chicago, IL)  --  Michal Rozsival [[ roh-ZIH-vahl ]] scored the winning goal in the fifth round of the shootout as the Blackhawks edged the Predators 3-2.  Brandon Saad and Patrick Kane both scored in regulation for Chicago, which has won three-of-four.  Corey Crawford made 25 saves in the win.  The 'Hawks host the Blues on Thursday night.

Blackhawks Acquire Handzus From Sharks

(Chicago, IL)  --  The Blackhawks have reportedly acquired center Michal Handzus from the San Jose Sharks.  Chicago will send San Jose a fourth-round draft pick in the deal.  The 36-year-old has a goal and assist over 28 games with the Sharks this season.  He has 180 goals in his career.

Bulls Face Wizards In DC

(Washington, DC)  --  The Bulls are in our nation's capital where they'll battle the Washington Wizards tonight.  Chicago moved to 40-and-32 with Sunday's 95-94 win over the Pistons.  The Bulls find themselves in the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference, a half game back of Atlanta for fifth.  Washington is just 27-and-46 on the year.  Tonight's game tips at 6:00.

NBA Upgrades Gibson's Foul On LBJ To Flagrent

(New York, NY)  --  The NBA has upgraded one of Taj Gibson's fouls on LeBron James to a flagrant from the Bulls' victory over the Heat last week.  James spoke out publicly about the officiating following the game.  The Heat's loss snapped a 27-game winning streak.

Notre Dame Women Play Duke

(Norfolk, VA)  --  The top-seeded Notre Dame women's basketball team will face Duke tonight for a spot in the Final Four.  The Fighting Irish defeated Kansas on Sunday to advance to the Elite Eight.  The second-seeded Blue Devils got by Nebraska in the Norfolk Regional.  Tonight's game starts at 6:00.

Fire Get Back To Work


(Bridgeview, IL)  --  The Chicago Fire are getting back to work this week as they prepare for Sunday's home game against the New York Red Bulls.  Chicago is 0-3-and-1 on the season and has scored just one goal in its four matches.  The Fire lost a 1-0 friendly with Minnesota United FC last Friday.
