Chelios Lands In Hockey Hall Of Fame
(Toronto, Ontario) -- Former Blackhawks defenseman Chris Chelios is one of the newest members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. The 51-year-old received the call yesterday along with Scott Niedermayer and Brendan Shanahan. Chelios played until he was 48 years old and appeared in more games than any defenseman in NHL history. He was a three-time Norris Trophy winner and three-time Stanley Cup champion.
Cubs Trash Angels In Home Run Derby At Wrigley
(Chicago, IL) -- Alfonso Soriano hit two solo homers as the Cubs handled the Angels 7-2 at Wrigley Field. Darwin Barney added a three-run shot while Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo each cracked a solo blast of their own for Chicago. Travis Wood gave up two runs over six-and-two-thirds innings to improve to 6-and-6. The Cubbies have won four in-a-row.
Cubs Close Series With Halos
(Chicago, IL) -- The Cubs and Angels wrap up their brief two-game series at Wrigley Field tonight. Jeff Samardzija gets the call for Chicago while the Halos send C.J. Wilson to the mound. The Cubs have won four straight and are looking to match their season-long winning streak of five games tonight. First pitch is set for 7:05.
Garza Confirms Contract Talks With Cubs
(Chicago, IL) -- Cubs right-hander Matt Garza has confirmed an ESPN report about his contract negotiations with the team. Garza calls the rumors about a possible extension "as real as a trade" and adds that there's about a fifty-fifty chance of him staying on with the Cubs. The 29-year-old is scheduled to be a free agent at year's end, so he'll likely receive a new deal or be traded by the July 31st deadline.
Cubs Officially Release Camp
(Chicago, IL) -- The Cubs officially parted ways with reliever Shawn Camp yesterday after the right-hander cleared waivers. Camp becomes the ninth player for Chicago's Opening Day 25-man roster to depart. Kyuji Fujikawa is out for the season after elbow surgery and makes a tenth. The only two players remaining from the starting bullpen are James Russell and Rule 5 selection Hector Rondon.
White Sox Slug Tigers
(Detroit, MI) -- The White Sox anemic offense exploded as they defeated the Tigers 11-4 at Comerica Park in the opener of a three-game set. Dayan Viciedo hit two home runs and drove in four, while Alex Rios was 6-for-6 with two RBI. Chicago had 23 hits total including 12 off of Tigers starter Justin Verlander. The White Sox scored 10 runs in the eighth and ninth as they ended a four-game losing streak. Jose Quintana improved to 4-and-2 dealing eight strong innings.
White Sox Continue Set With Detroit
(Detroit, MI) -- The White Sox and Tigers continue their three-game series from Comerica Park in Detroit tonight with the middle contest. Dylan Axelrod gets the start for Chicago while the Tigers send Rick Porcello [[ por-SELL-oh ]] to the hill. The Sox are looking to get on a roll after ending a four-game slide with last night's 23-hit, 11-run attack on Detroit. First pitch is set for 6:08.
Peavy Won't Pitch Until After Break
(Detroit, MI) -- It appears White Sox right-hander Jake Peavy will hold off until after the All-Star break to pitch in a game. Manager Robin Ventura says the team will wait until late next week to give the veteran a rehab start. Peavy fractured his left rib on June 4th against Seattle. He threw in a simulated game yesterday in Detroit, throwing 75 pitches. Peavy also throw a 53-pitch bullpen session last week in Tampa.
NBA's Negotiating Period Ends Today
(Chicago, IL) -- Today marks the end of the NBA's free-agent negotiating period. Teams can now officially sign players to contracts. The Bulls are expected to finalize a deal for the return of veteran center Nazr Mohammed. Guard Marco Belinelli is set to officially depart to join the Spurs. The Bulls have also finalized their Las Vegas Summer League roster, which includes draft picks Tony Snell and Erik Murphy. The Bulls open play Saturday against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Fire In Action Tonight
(Bridgeview, IL) -- The Fire take a break from MLS play tonight as they play host to Mexican pro side Club America in a friendly from Toyota Park. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN Deportes and ESPN2. It's the third straight season Chicago will host a Mexican opponent in Bridgeview. Kickoff is set for 7:30.
Sky Face Mystics
(Rosemont, IL) -- The Sky are back on the hardwood this morning as they host the Washington Mystics at Allstate Arena. Chicago has won four of its last five to move to 8-and-4 on the campaign. The Mystics are 6-and-6 on the season. Today's game tips off at 11:30 a.m. in Rosemont.
