The Galesburg City Council will meet on Monday, July 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. On the agenda is a recommendation to purchase a new K9 police dog, "Ajax" to replace 10-year-old "Ares" who cannot meet the physical demands of serving any longer. It is common practice for retiring police dogs to remain with their current handler, in this case it has been recommended to donate Ares to Officer Mings his handler.
With Ares’ retirement, the GPD requested quotes for a new police dog. Ajax was the low and best quote at $5,000 with a guarantee of both one year health and the successful completion of the necessary training. If Ajax fails to complete the training for any reason, the purchase price will be refunded. Two Galesburg Police officers evaluated Ajax and
recommend the purchase. Sufficient funds are available in the Special Enforcement budget for this purchase.
