Head coach Marc Trestman made the announcement on Wednesday. Cutler injured his ankle last Sunday in his first game back since hurting his groin in mid-October. Briggs is out with a fractured shoulder.

(Lake Forest, IL) -- The Chicago Bears signed safety Derrick Martin to a one-year deal on Wednesday. Martin played in five games for New England last season, recording one sack and two tackles. The seven-year veteran has appeared in 66 games with the Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, New York Giants and Pats.

Former Bears and Cowboys wide receiver Sam Hurd is getting 15-years behind bars on a drug-trafficking conviction. The "Chicago Tribune" reports the one-time NIU player had pleaded guilty back in April to conspiring to possess and distribute marijuana and cocaine. The 28-year-old Hurd has been behind bars since a judge revoked his bond over a year ago. He was arrested in December of 2011 near Chicago after getting a kilo of cocaine from an undercover policeman.

Chicago White Sox starter Chris Sale was fifth in the American League Cy Young vote. He earned one first-place vote and 44 points. Max Scherzer had 28 of the 30 first-place votes for 203 points to win his first Cy Young Award. Yu Darvish of the Rangers was second while the Mariners' Hisashi Iwakuma was third.

(Rosemont, IL) -- Brandon Young scored a game-high 23 points to go with six rebounds and four steals as the DePaul Blue Demons fell 75-68 to Southern Miss in Rosemont. Cleveland Melvin chipped in with 16 points for DePaul, which dropped to 1-and-1 on the young season. The Blue Demons play Wright State on Saturday.

(Stanford, CA) -- The Northwestern Wildcats are on the road tonight in Northern California playing the Stanford Cardinal at Maples Pavilion. The Wildcats are 1-and-0 after winning the season opener 72-55 over Eastern Illinois. Stanford is 1-and-1 following a 112-103 setback to BYU on Monday.
